Child & Youth Neuropsychiatry Clinic (CYNC)

Provided by Island Health

Provides children and their families with psychiatric consultation and system navigation support to access needed community services.
The Child & Youth Neuropsychiatry Clinic (CYNC) is available to all Island Health children, youth and their families to ensure psychiatry care is available in partnership with the family's GP, NP or pediatrician for up to 18 months. In addition to access for a comprehensive psychiatry assessment, psychiatric nursing support is available for the child/youth and their family, as well as system navigation support to ensure connection to services in the community.

Accepted Referrals
  • Those aged 5 through 18 years
  • Youth who consent to participate
  • Children/youth requiring a non-urgent psychiatric assessment (autism and eating disorder assessments are excluded)
  • Children/youth under 19 years with a developmental disability, neurodiversity and/or intellectual disability with functionally impairing mental health concerns
  • The following diagnoses are included: ASD, complex ADHD, Tourette’s disorder, OCD, FASD, alcohol related neurodevelopmental disorder, seizure disorders, head injuries, genetic disorder
Referrals outside of the above scope will be redirected to appropriate service such as DDMHT

Referral Process
  • Complete and fax referral form to 250-519-5159
  • Referral is reviewed by intake nurse who will connect with the referring provider regarding declined/redirected referrals
  • If the referral meets criteria, the nurse will contact the child's family and complete an intake consult
  • When the referral has been accepted, the referring physician will be notified, while the patient and family will be provided a the pre-assessment package
  • Once the pre-assessment package has been returned, the patient/family will be advised of their scheduled appointment. Initial assessments will be done in person whenever possible while follow up appointments may be done in person or virtually; options will be discussed with the family
  • Referring provider will receive a copy of the assessment
  • The child/youth and their family will continue to be followed and supported by the CYNC nurse and/or system navigator. Ongoing psychiatry care will be provided as determined by the psychiatrist and in consultation with the primary care provider or pediatrician.
